In today's diverse and interconnected world, effective communication in peer support settings requires a deep understanding of inclusive language and its impact. This training course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to create a welcoming and safe environment for all individuals, regardless of their background or identity. Participants will learn to recognize and overcome common language biases and stereotypes that may inadvertently exclude or marginalize certain groups. Through interactive exercises and real-life scenarios, they will develop proficiency in utilizing person-first language and other inclusive communication techniques to address individuals' identities, experiences, and needs respectfully. Additionally, participants will explore strategies for effectively navigating conversations around sensitive topics such as race, gender identity, sexual orientation, mental health, and disabilities, using language that promotes understanding, empathy, and empowerment. Finally, the course will emphasize the importance of ongoing self-reflection and learning processes to continuously improve language practices and foster a culture of inclusivity within peer support settings.

Meet Your Facilitators


Anisa Mustafa (they she) lives on the lands of Doeg and Piscataway Peoples in Northern Virgina with their two cats Bobbie and JJ. They are a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist in the Common wealth of Virginia and The Director of Training for One New Heartbeat, a grassroots organization in Northern California. They are a lifelong learner dedicated to serving their community within a trauma-informed, culturally responsive and social justice framework that promotes diversity, equity, and accessibility for all.

Vanessa Williams (she/her) is a state-certified peer support specialist, trainer, mental health advocate, CEO and founder of Elevate Recovery. She specializes in aiding individuals and organizations to use diversity, equity, incluison and belonging in their workplace culture for increased productivity and empleoyee retention. Vanessa's areas of expertise include peer suppoert leadership, mentoring, and coaching from a trauma-informed perspective.
